When Anxiety or Panic Strikes Unexpectedly: A Personal Journey of Finding Peace in the Moment

February 13, 2025 By Aimeé Poché

Hi! Thanks for visiting! Click here to subscribe to our blog.

There is a raw, uncomfortable truth we need to address… when anxiety or panic strikes unexpectedly, it strips away our confidence and leaves us feeling completely exposed.

Recently, I found myself in such a situation at my church, and I want to share my experience with you.

Personal Story on Experiencing Anxiety and Panic

Imagine feeling completely at ease in a familiar setting, then suddenly, it becomes an uncharted emotional landscape that leaves you feeling helpless. Suddenly, while the pastor was speaking, anxiety and panic rushed over me like a tidal wave. For over two decades, this church has been my anchor. Yet, on this particular Sunday, anxiety, and panic stormed in uninvited, dramatically disrupting my emotional landscape and transforming my familiar sanctuary into uncharted territory.

My heart started racing, and I felt so overwhelmed that I texted my husband, sitting right next to me, not to draw any attention my way, and typed, “I think I am about to pass out.”

At that moment, my mind began spinning with rapid-fire thoughts. I needed to leave immediately, but how could I exit without causing a scene? What if I passed out in the middle of the aisle?

Everyone would stare, and it would interrupt the pastor’s message. All these thoughts swirled through my mind in less than a minute, threatening to overtake me entirely.

Anxiety and Panic Management Techniques

Instead of giving in to panic, I remembered some anxiety and panic management techniques I had learned. I started with mindful breathing, inhaling deeply for four counts and exhaling slowly for 6 counts, repeating this cycle several times. Then, I quietly employed the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique, identifying things I could see, touch, hear, smell, and taste in my immediate environment.

To my relief, these simple techniques began to calm my anxious mind and quiet my spiraling thoughts. I didn’t wholly understand what triggered the anxiety or panic, but I felt empowered knowing I had practical tools to manage it. The episode passed, and I made it through the service without anyone noticing my internal struggle. Well, except for my husband, who leaned over to ask if I was ok.

Panic and Anxiety are Common Experiences

This experience taught me that anxiety or panic can happen to anyone, anywhere, even in familiar settings where we feel safe. Having coping strategies readily available is crucial for managing these unexpected moments. Most importantly, I learned I am not alone in this experience, nor are you.

I do not know what caused the anxiety and panic that day, but I felt better knowing I had something to do when it came. These techniques didn’t just calm me down—they gave me a sense of control in an uncontrollable moment. Remember, anxiety and panic are feelings, not a definition of who you are. If you’re struggling with similar experiences, know that professional help is always an option, and there’s no shame in seeking support.

Prayer to Ease Panic and Anxiety

I want to pray for you:

Father, in the midst of my overwhelming anxieties and panic, I come before You, remembering Your promise in 1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”  I surrender my fears and worries to You, trusting in Your words from Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.”

Lord, I choose to believe Isaiah 41:10 – that You are with me, that You will strengthen me, help me, and uphold me with Your righteous right hand. When anxiety and panic threaten to consume me, remind me that You are my rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer. Fill me with Your spirit of power, love, and a sound mind, as promised in 2 Timothy 1:7. Help me to trust in You completely, knowing that You are always present, always caring, and always working for my good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
