I always pray for the huge flashing sign from God for strength and direction. And I am sure you have heard the story about the guy on the roof in a flood who turned away the boat, the helicopter, etc. waiting for God to send help……
Like the guy on the roof, sometimes I have God flashing tiny signs left and right and I am not sure I am giving him the appropriate credit. As a matter of fact, I think sometimes I may actually take the credit myself and quit bothering to ask God for help in the small things.
Last night in my small group a friend was sharing how she prays for parking places, prays in her closet when she has nothing to wear, and constantly all day for the little and big things of life. When she was telling us, I was nodding, like of course…I do that too. And most times I do….but when I started thinking hard about the last time I prayed for a routine little boost of help, I couldn’t name it.
I went to sleep last night and forgot all about it. Today, I was in a situation where I really, really needed to find something. It was important for clients. I was starting to obsess about what I would do if I didn’t find it. Unfortunately, it was one of those things that just wasn’t in my control. And then I remembered….
I have no control over this, but God has control over everything.
So, I said a silent prayer over and over again in my car to look for the needed “thing”. I prayed and said “God, please help me find this. You know it’s importance and value. If I don’t find it, I don’t think there is a contingency plan.
I got to my destination. Parked and went in to look in the logical place it would be. NOT THERE. Oh no. Then I had a thought of another place it might be. I wanted to write it down so I wouldn’t forget. I pulled out a random drawer looking for a pen and guess what else was there??? The “thing”.
Can you believe it? God wasn’t going to let me miss it. He is so faithful. What about you? Do you sometimes feel like you shouldn’t bother God with little day to day things? Then do feel guilty only calling on Him when you are in dire straits? I was reminded today that God wants us to look to Him all of the time and in all things.
16Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 16-18
I think I will write a note to remind myself of this!
Thanks for enlightening me. Sometimes I find myself only calling on God when I am troubled. I’m going to try to do better.
