I made my first king cake today. It actually came out pretty good. It was an all-of-a-sudden, a “Hey, I think I’m going to make a king cake today.” There was no planning, no leading up to this decision, just something in the moment I decided I wanted to do it. I had never made one before. I even texted a few friends for a recipe, crickets on the other end 😊. So, I just looked one up a recipe online, mixed up the dough between coming home from the therapy room and about to leave to bring two of my daughters to the dentist. Right now, as I am writing this blog post, I am looking at that beautiful, braided bread circle, golden from the oven, ready to share with family and thinking “I made that.” My home smells like a freshly baked cinnamon roll right out of the oven.
I did the same thing the night before. At 8:45 PM, with the house finally quieting down after a full day, I was sitting at the table watching a YouTube tutorial on tissue paper flowers. Who knew all the ways you could twist, layer, and fluff them into these endless sizes and colors? My mind was already swirling from the day, thinking about connecting with my husband, checking in on how all my kiddoes are doing, thinking about friends, wondering if my strawberry plants are okay in this cold snap, and whether the chickens made it back in the hen house where it is warm. But then the thought hit me: I have paper towels right here. I’m going to try this!
By 9 PM, I had made two. The first one was not good at all. But the second? It looked so real. I was impressed. “I’m buying tissue paper tomorrow,” I whispered to myself, heart full and excited. That’s me in real life: God, family, friends, home life, therapy life, and hidden desires to create something even when life feels full. Your to-do list is overflowing, your life is busy, but here is my heart to yours: sometimes, it just takes deciding to go for it today. Not waiting for perfect conditions, just starting right where you are.
That Full Feeling We All Know
You know that head full feeling with life’s threads pulling everywhere? For me, it’s what I said above: connecting with God, my husband and family first, keeping friends close in thought, then life at home with tending strawberries and chickens, planning meals, and talking myself into that cleaning list. All this swirls while prayerfully preparing for next day in the therapy room.
Picture your own day: the mental checklist that never quiets, the loved ones tugging at your heart, the never ended list of todos and connections that need to be made. We carry it all, don’t we? The time in the office. The family moments that demand presence even when you are stretched thin. Those personal joys with children, smells in the kitchen, sweet animals whether chickens, dogs, or cats. It is all these moments, this full life.
Some days become task marathons putting deeper conversations aside. Some days there is pouring out till you feel empty and unseen. But one decision to go for it changes everything. Think about the last time you felt that kind of joy or spontaneity. Maybe it was walking over and kissing your husband’s forehead, or telling a joke during a family dinner where you lovingly cooked a new recipe and the family loved it, or an intentional reaching out to a friend for coffee that turned into hours of sharing.
Those moments do not just happen; they stem from choosing to lean in, to go for it despite the lists and thoughts swirling around. I have seen this … a woman carrying the weight of unspoken dreams, buried under layers of “shoulds” and “have tos.” Their life rich with responsibility but starved for joy and connection. And yet, when they make that one decision, light breaks through.
It is the same for all of us. That tug between what must be done and what our hearts long for? Mothers juggling school runs and work time constraints. Dads wrestling with provision, demands from work and knowing their family needs more of them. Friends navigating distance and drift. We all feel it, that pressure building until something has to give.
But what if the “something” is not surrender, but a bold step forward? Those king cake and tissue flower moments show it perfectly: spontaneous decisions where you stop waiting and pondering and just do it, right smack in the middle of a busy life. These quick choices get you moving past the overthinking, turning thoughts into action.
How Full Days Squeeze Us
Packed schedules squeeze out time for real connections. Conversations turn into quick checklists, and vulnerability gets pushed aside. We wait for apologies, clarity, or just someone to notice our effort. Spouses barely talk, just short words when passing by.
Kids grow up with hours of homework and parents taking work home struggling with balance which can push away needed family connections. I hear these stories often: marriages hurting from things left unsaid, families dealing with teen struggles, people feeling lost in midlife changes. All that busyness steals our presence with each other, our closeness, and our dreams.
The answer isn’t more time on the calendar. It is deciding today to go for it. Speaking up about your needs can turn silence into real talk. Choosing forgiveness can warm up a cold relationship. These are not miracles. They are just choices anyone can make. What is squeezing you the tightest right now? Name it, then do something about it. Whisper a prayer over your coffee. Schedule or return that call even when you are tired. Set a kind boundary.
Full days do not have to leave us empty. They can make us stronger when we choose to act. My king cake made and baked between the office and the dentist appointment. Flowers came from paper towels. Just heart-led action, right in the middle of it all.
Common Stuck Spots and How to Break Free
Here are some common stuck spots with one simple decision to move forward.
Tense silences? Say: “My part hurt us, can we talk heart to heart?”
Scared about what’s next? Name a value like faith, family, or creativity, pray over it, then take one small step in that direction.
Bills piling up? Pray over each one, then start with the smallest.
Friends gone quiet? Send a simple text: “You’re on my mind. Coffee soon?” Presence not perfection.
Health on hold? Take a short walk to lighten the load.
But what is really holding you back? Other people’s choices like a spouse pulling away or kids pushing back. Days so packed there’s no room left. Hurt and fear whispering it won’t work anyway. Remember the paper towel flower? First one flopped, but I made a second and it turned out beautiful. That king cake with zero planning? It came out pretty good.
Fear might whisper failure, but those little wins prove it wrong.
Spouse distant? Reach out with patience.
Kids resisting? Stay steady with love.
Days overflowing? Carve out small pockets that matter.
Those lying thoughts shouting defeat? Push back with truth and keep going.
I love Proverbs 16:9: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Make your decision, then trust Him with it.
What is holding you back right now? Name it out loud. Push past it. Go for it. When your heart nudges you, no big plan is needed, that quick “yes” opens the door.
Your Go For It Plan Today
Here is a simple way to start right now:
- Name what is swirling in your heart. Write it down. Husband time? Kids’ updates? Friends? Garden check? Painting? Supper ideas? Get it clear.
- Spot what you are waiting on. An apology? More energy? The right moment? Call it out, let it go.
- Pick one small thing and do it. Send that text. Step outside. Mix the dough. Just act.
- Let it be messy. That is where the good stuff grows, flops turn into wins, tears into joy.
This is good stewardship of the day God gives us for healing, connection, and growth. Ephesians 5:15-16 calls us to make the most of our time. Your choice today honors that gift. Try this plan throughout the week. You will see the swirling thoughts settle, waiting ease up, sparks come alive, and mess turn beautiful. Just like my king cake and flowers. All heart-led, right in everyday life.
